What We Do
The Craftsbury Recreation Committee plans and offers year-round events for the community so people in town and surrounding towns can have access to opportunities and enriching activities at little or no cost to families. While the CRC plans several events throughout the year, our longest running event is Craftsbury Old Home Day held on the second Saturday of August which includes a parade, pet show, games, bounce houses and the fire department food tent. Also in the summer, CRC sponsors swimming lessons for children that takes place at Caspian Lake in Greensboro. Once a month in June, July and August, a Bike Night is offered. Families are able to ride bikes on the smoothly paved Craftsbury road in front of the Academy which is blocked off from traffic to allow safe riding for all ages. On Halloween evening, Trunk or Treat occurs on the beautiful Craftsbury Common where many cars come decorated and give out treats. In addition the Craftsbury Public Library gives out free books and the Craftsbury Food Shelf collects food for the pantry. At this event, the Fire Department does a fantastic job lighting up the Common, creating a fun and safe space for trick or treaters of all ages. In December there is a Light Parade with holiday decorated vehicles on the Common., The event includes warming fire pits, hot chocolate and donuts for all to enjoy a festive evening to celebrate the beginning of the Winter season. CRC also sponsors a Family Open Gym starting in October and goes throughout the winter months. The Open Gym is a time for free play for toddler through elementary age children and their families to meet on Sunday mornings in the Academy gym.
The Craftsbury Recreation Committee meets 4 times a year to plan–the rest of our work is the leg work for showing up to make events happen. The Rec Committee invites anyone interested in helping plan and provide activities for the community to join this cooperative and collaborative group.
